The details below give an overview of the MOT test procedure. From time to time the regulations will change so please do check with the following official MOT sites if you have any questions or concerns.

The MOT test is a legal requirement for most vehicles over three years old. It checks key components to ensure your car meets road safety and environmental standards. The test covers everything from lights and brakes to tyres, emissions and the overall condition of the vehicle. It is not the same as a service, so regular maintenance is still important. If your car fails, you will be given a list of the issues that need fixing before a retest. Booking in advance and doing some basic checks beforehand can help you avoid common failures.

What is Involved in an MOT Test?

There are 9 parts to the MOT test. Below we have outlined a summary of what you can expect your vehicle to be tested on.

  • Reflectors
  • Functioning horn

The tester will check that all lights are working correctly, including indicators, brake lights, and number plate lights. The horn must be present and operational.

Steering and suspension

  • Steering system and control
  • All suspension including wheel bearings and drive shafts
  • Shock absorbers

Steering components are inspected for wear, security, and responsiveness. The suspension system must be in good condition with no excessive movement or leaks.

Brakes

  • Parking brake lever mechanism and mountings
  • Hand operated brake control valves
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Mechanical and hydraulic brake components
  • Brake Performance

Your vehicle’s braking system is tested for efficiency and condition. This includes checking brake pads, discs, lines, and performance using a rolling road.

Tyres and wheels

  • Tyre condition and tread depth
  • Wheel condition and security

Tyres must have at least 1.6mm tread depth and be free from damage such as cuts or bulges. Wheels are checked for cracks and secure fitting.

Seat belts

  • Condition, operation, and security
  • Warning light functionality

All seat belts must function correctly and fasten securely. If your car has a seat belt warning light, this will also be checked.

Body and structure

  • Vehicle structure, body security and condition
  • Doors and seats
  • Registration plates and VIN plate
  • Spare wheel carrier
  • Speed limiter

The structure of the car is checked for corrosion or damage, and doors, bonnet, and boot must open and close securely. Registration plates and the vehicle’s identification number must be present and legible.

 Fuel and emissions

  • Exhaust system
  • Fuel system
  • Exhaust emissions-spark ignition and compression ignition

The fuel system is inspected for leaks, and the exhaust must be securely fitted and not excessively noisy. Emissions are tested to ensure the vehicle complies with legal limits based on its age and fuel type.

View of the road

  • Mirrors
  • Windscreen including wipers and washers
  • Bonnet

The driver must have a clear view of the road. Windscreens are checked for damage, and washers/wipers must function correctly. Mirrors must be secure and undamaged. The bonnet catch must hold the bonnet securely when closed.

Motor tricycles and quadricycles

  • Lighting
  • Motorcycle derived steering / suspension systems
  • Brakes
  • Tyres
  • Seat belts
  • Body and structure
  • Emissions
  • Drivers view of the road

If your vehicle falls under this category, it will undergo a slightly different version of the test, tailored to its specific design and components.
