Taking a few minutes to check your vehicle before the test could save you time, money and stress. Many MOT failures are down to issues that could be spotted and sorted quickly in advance. Even something as simple as a blown bulb or worn wiper blade can be enough to fail the test. Use the checklist below as a helpful guide.
Remember, while this list covers common problem areas, it’s not a substitute for a full service or professional inspection. If you’re unsure about any part of the test or would like us to carry out a pre-MOT check, just get in touch with the team here at Clover Autos.
- Tyres
- Lights
- Suspension and Brakes
- Exhaust & Emissions
- Horn
- Registration Plate
- Vehicle Identification Number
Your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) should be clearly displayed on the vehicle. This is usually found on the dashboard or driver’s side door frame. It must match the details on your V5C logbook.
- Seats and Seat belts
- Mirrors
- Wipers and Washers
Top up the washer fluid and test that the wipers clear the screen properly. Blades should not be split or leave smears. Both washers and wipers must work effectively to pass the MOT.
- Windscreen
- Petrol Cap
On the day of your MOT test, ensure that you’ve washed your vehicle and there is enough fuel! (Many are sent off to fuel up their vehicle as it will be running for at least half an hour in the test). Take along your previous MOT even if it has expired. If it is the first MOT, remember to take along your registration document.
If you are not confident in carrying out these checks yourself or would like to leave it to experts, contact Clover Autos for advice on MOT preparation.
