Around 30% of vehicles fail the MOT test every year! Avoid easily preventable MOT failures by carrying out a series of simple checks. Although these checks do not guarantee the car will pass, they will help avoid easily preventable MOT failures.

Don’t want to go through the hassle? Click here to make passing the MOT test really easy!

Taking a few minutes to check your vehicle before the test could save you time, money and stress. Many MOT failures are down to issues that could be spotted and sorted quickly in advance. Even something as simple as a blown bulb or worn wiper blade can be enough to fail the test. Use the checklist below as a helpful guide.

Remember, while this list covers common problem areas, it’s not a substitute for a full service or professional inspection. If you’re unsure about any part of the test or would like us to carry out a pre-MOT check, just get in touch with the team here at Clover Autos.

Check all the tyres are inflated to the correct pressure, and there is at least 1.6mm of tread across the central 75% of the tyre. Make sure there are no cuts, bulges or damage to the tyre wall. While the spare tyre isn’t tested, it’s still worth keeping a road-legal one on board in case of emergency.
Inspect all exterior lights to confirm they’re working properly. This includes headlights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators and number plate lights. Don’t forget to check the hazard lights flash on both sides with the ignition on and off.
Push down firmly on each corner of the car and release. The car should bounce once and settle. If it continues bouncing, the shock absorbers may be worn. Also check the foot brake and handbrake apply smoothly and hold the car securely.
Start the engine and listen for loud noises that could suggest a leak in the exhaust system. Black or blue smoke can also indicate a problem. Regular servicing can help reduce emissions and avoid MOT issues in this area.
Give the horn a quick press to ensure it works properly. It must sound loudly and clearly. Air horns or multi-tone horns are not allowed under MOT regulations and could lead to a failure.
Make sure your registration plate is clean, clearly visible and securely fixed. It must not be cracked or obscured, and the spacing and font must comply with legal standards.

Your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) should be clearly displayed on the vehicle. This is usually found on the dashboard or driver’s side door frame. It must match the details on your V5C logbook.

Check that all seats are secure and locked in place. Seat belts must pull out smoothly, fasten properly, and retract fully. Also check for fraying or damage to the belts themselves.
Mirrors must be securely mounted and give a clear view to the rear and sides. You should have at least one interior mirror and one exterior mirror on the driver’s side. Cracked or missing mirrors could lead to a fail.

Top up the washer fluid and test that the wipers clear the screen properly. Blades should not be split or leave smears. Both washers and wipers must work effectively to pass the MOT.

Check for damage in the driver’s line of sight. Chips larger than 10mm can cause a fail. In other areas swept by the wipers, damage must not exceed 40mm. Ensure the screen is clean and provides good visibility.
Open the fuel filler cap and inspect the seal. It should close securely and be free from cracks or signs of wear. A faulty seal could lead to fuel vapour leaks and emissions problems during the test.

On the day of your MOT test, ensure that you’ve washed your vehicle and there is enough fuel! (Many are sent off to fuel up their vehicle as it will be running for at least half an hour in the test). Take along your previous MOT even if it has expired. If it is the first MOT, remember to take along your registration document.

If you are not confident in carrying out these checks yourself or would like to leave it to experts, contact Clover Autos for advice on MOT preparation.
